Book van joins library outreach “fleet”

Through the generosity of an anonymous local donor, the Montrose Regional Library District will receive a new tool this fall to promote literacy in the community. A book van is being outfitted by Summit Body Works of Fort Lupton and should take to the streets of Montrose and Olathe in October. The 19 foot Sprinter Van will be able to visit locations that the current 32 foot bookmobile cannot. Staff is very excited about the 13 locations they will be able to serve each month.

Staff from the Book Van will go to locations around the community and take carts full of books into facilities in what is known as lobby stops. Carrying up to eight carts at a time, the van will be stocked each day with specific items depending on what stops it will visit each day. Carts will be loaded on and off the van using a lift, similar to a handicap wheel chair lift, located inside the rear doors of the van. The van is capable of seating three people with the driver’s seat, passenger seat, and a jump seat.

Books and other items will be checked out using a laptop computer and either Wi-Fi from the facility or a Wi-Fi Hotspot on the Van which utilizes cellular phone service. If neither of these are available, staff can use either an offline system or a good old paper form and then enter the information into the library’s computer system later, by hand.

Stops which will be served include the Olathe Early Childhood Center (morning and afternoon classes), Colorow Care Center, Olathe Main Street, Sharing Ministries, Anciano Towers, San Juan Living Center, Centennial Towers Senior Living, the Community Recreation Center, PACE/Homestead Senior Living, Valley Manor Senior Living, Meadowlark/Cimarron Senior Living, and Haven House. In addition to these stops, the van will be used in parades and all sorts of community events.

Those of us at the Library District are very excited to be able to expand our outreach services to the community. We would like to again express our deep gratitude to our anonymous donor who made all of this

possible. If you see the new book van out and about, please stop by and take a look.
